The Center for the Study of Peoples and Cultures of Portuguese Expression (CEPCEP) is, as its founding Statutes define, an institution of the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP) whose general programmatic purpose is to study “peoples and cultures, namely those with a language Portuguese official, foster mutual understanding and contribute to their approximation ”. First conceived by a group of founders in the early 1980s and then instituted at the UCP in the spring of 1983, CEPCEP closed in 2017 a first and long (34 years) life cycle, coinciding with the leadership of its “historic” President, Prof. Eng. Roberto Carneiro. It is the history of these years and the much that the Center has accomplished since its foundation that this book is about.
Part I, divided into six chapters, covers the institutional history of CEPCEP, its original idea, its project, its implementation, its organic evolution and the modalities of its insertion in the Catholic University, since the beginning of the 1980s against. Part II, which is also structured in six chapters, focuses on its scientific work, the production and dissemination of scientific research, training, the provision of services and consultancy to the community and society, and the publication of works, ending with a diachronic general synthesis about the scientific dynamics of CEPCEP and an epilogue, about its scientific potential and its present and future. In the annexes, twelve tables are gathered that summarize information referred to in the text: a diagram with the composition of the different directions, the lists of courses and conferences, congresses and seminars, studies and consultancies, published books, volumes of the magazine Peoples and Cultures and collaborating authors, the global chronological and qualitative distribution of European activities, publications and projects carried out and the list of partner entities throughout the history of the Center.
Redes de Conhecimento. História do Centro de Estudos dos Povos e Culturas de Expressão Portuguesa is thus, at the same time, an institutional memory and an essay of scientific appreciation of one of the oldest and specific research units of the Catholic University of Portugal. Portraying the past and the present, also through its pages, each reader can imagine the future that are within the reach of the Center for the Study of Peoples and Cultures of Portuguese Expression (CEPCEP) at UCP.
